Gentle Jazz is the creation of Darrell Courtley. It is a musical presentation designed primarily for Continuing Care and Assisted Living facility residents and is offered to those establishments as our donation and at no cost. Although we primarily perform in the Northern New Jersey area, we have also given this concert at facilities in Connecticut and Pennsylvania with great response. Previous performances have included Paragon Village in Hackettstown, NJ, Merry Heart in Ledgewood, NJ, and The Heritage at St. Paul's in Greenville, PA.
The concert lasts under an hour and includes both instrumental and vocal renditions of Great American Songbook tunes familiar to residents, such as “All of Me”, “Sentimental Journey”, “Honeysuckle Rose” and “It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing”. I play clarinet and my wife, Mary, is featured on vocals, accompanied by a computer generated rhythm section of piano, bass and drums. We bring our own microphone, speaker and everything we need for the concert; all we require is one electrical outlet.
The program includes selections from what has become known as "The Great American Songbook", including old favorites such as the following samples:
